In “Murder to Excellence”, Kanye and Jay-Z are at the top of their game. It’s an interesting concept; Wikipedia tells me that the song is actually a two-parter of “Murder” and “Excellence”. They were produced separately and are different in tone and subject though bound together by the common theme of the black American experience. “Murder” highlights the dark underbelly of intercity America. Kanye’s at the top of his game here, spitting rhymes about his hometown of Chicago and desperately trying to point out the systemic problems that continue to go un-addressed in this country. “Excellence” is about swagger, and really, who’s better than Jay-Z when it comes to swag? The production is really solid, and it’s easily one of my favourite tracks on Watch the Throne.
